In the first quarter, a total of 372,334 road vehicles were produced by domestic automotive companies, down 7% year-on-year. The largest part of the production was passenger cars, which rolled off the production lines at 366,510 units, followed by 1,321 buses, 277 trucks, 169 motorcycles, 3,513 small trailers up to 3.5t and 544 large trailers over 3.5t. There was a significant increase in the production of electric vehicles, with a total of 65 063 units produced from January to March this year, 140.8% more than in the same period last year. Of this number, 50,484 were pure electric vehicles and 14,579 were equipped with plug-in hybrid drives.

“Despite the overall lower quarterly production results correlating with the slowly increasing new vehicle registrations in the main European markets, March itself became a record month in the number of electric vehicles produced in the Czech Republic. Production ramp-ups of new models, in this case the new Skoda Elroq and the upgraded Enyaq, always arouse market and customer interest, which is also reflected in the final domestic production statistics. Despite the fact that the share of these electric models in total production continues to grow, we are still lagging behind the expectations of the requirement to regulate CO2 emissions. The ability to bring new models to the market, whether with electric, combustion or other powertrains, which are in demand on the market, even in this over-regulated environment, which we are currently navigating, is a success for the entire production chain of companies and clearly good news for the entire domestic economy,” says Martin Jahn, President of the Association of the Automotive Industry.
Passenger vehicles
In the first three months of this year, 366,510 passenger vehicles were produced in the Czech Republic, i.e. 7.1% less than in the first quarter of the previous year. Electric vehicles produced in the period were 64 956 units and their share in domestic car production rose to 17.7%. A total of 50 377 battery BEVs and 14 579 plug-in hybrid PHEVs were produced. A total of 26 156 vehicles were delivered to the domestic market, 11.7% more than in the previous year. Almost 93% of the vehicles produced (340 354 units) were destined for foreign markets. However, vehicle exports recorded an 8.3% year-on-year decline.
Škoda Auto, the largest domestic carmaker, produced 236,524 passenger cars (-2.8%) at its domestic plants in January-March. 22,016 vehicles (+18.1%) were placed on the Czech market, while 214,508 vehicles (-4.5%) were sent abroad. The carmaker recorded a year-on-year increase of almost 282% in production values in the electric vehicle segment. A total of 48,442 battery BEVs and plug-in hybrid PHEVs were produced, i.e. 20.5% of total production. Of these, 40,866 were pure battery BEVs and 7,576 were plug-in hybrids. The overall results of the Mladá Boleslav carmaker’s electric vehicle production were significantly boosted by the start of series production of the new Škoda Elroq model in January and the modernised version of the first fully electric model, the Enyaq, in February.
Hyundai’s Nosovice plant saw an 18% year-on-year decline in production. Hyundai produced a total of 71,540 vehicles in the first quarter. A total of 67,816 vehicles were exported (-18.3%) and 3,724 were placed on the domestic market (-11.1%). Of the total number of vehicles produced, 9,511 had pure electric drive and 7,003 had plug-in hybrid drive. Overall, electric vehicles accounted for 23% of total production.
Toyota saw an 8.6% year-on-year decline in production in the first quarter. The Cologne-based carmaker has produced a total of 58,446 passenger vehicles since the beginning of the year, of which 416 units (0.7%) were placed on the domestic market and 58,030 units (99.3%) on the foreign market. Almost 60% of the vehicles produced were Yaris HEV hybrids.
Buses
In the first quarter, a total of 1,321 buses were produced in the Czech Republic (+12.4%), 104 of which were destined for the domestic market (-43.5%), while a larger number of 1,230 were exported (+6.9%). Iveco CR in Vysoké Mýto produced 1,275 buses, i.e. 19.4% more than last year, 1,210 were exported (+7.7%) and 78 (-25%) were sold domestically.
SOR Libchavy, on the other hand, recorded lower production figures in the first three months of this year at the level of 41 buses, i.e. 56 units, i.e. 57.7% less than last year.
KHMC produced a total of 5 minibuses in January-March.
The zero-emission bus segment totalled 107 buses produced in the first three months, all of which were purely battery-powered. A total of 97 of them were manufactured by Iveco CR, the remaining 10 by SOR.
Trucks
Tatra Trucks, which is the only manufacturer of trucks among the members of the Association of the Automotive Industry, produced 277 vehicles in the first quarter of this year, i.e. 128 fewer than in the same period last year (i.e. -31.6%). Tatra’s production was mostly exported (148 units), 83 vehicles were placed in the Czech Republic. The decrease in production is mainly related to a higher share of special vehicles, whose production is more time-consuming than for standard models.
Motorcycles
Jawa produced 169 motorcycles in the first three months of the year, 72 fewer than in the previous year (-29.9%). Of the total production, 83 motorcycles of this brand were placed on the Czech market (-8.8%), 86 machines were exported (-42.7%).

In the category of large trailers and semi-trailers, there was an overall year-on-year increase in production of +2.4% to a total of 544 units. Schwarzmüller produced 416 large trailers, 7.2% more than last year. The company sold 65 units in the Czech Republic (+58.5%) and 330 units abroad (-7.6%).
