January production in the passenger car segment, compared to the first month of 2022, was up 21.7% year-on-year. A total of 112,794 passenger vehicles were produced in the Czech Republic. Almost 11% of these were electric vehicles. However, the volume of production continues to be negatively affected by faltering supply chains and shortages of certain components. These were particularly evident at the beginning of the year in the decline in production in the bus category, of which 134 units (-37.2%) rolled off the production line. The motorcycle category also recorded a year-on-year decline, with a total of 74 units produced.

“Despite the continuing tightness in supply chains and shortages of some components, passenger car manufacturers managed to achieve a nearly 22% increase in production in January. Thus, approaching the pre-crisis production levels positively supported the domestic economy. However, the year-on-year decline in bus production shows that the coming year 2023 will not be easy for the Czech automotive industry either. This is confirmed by the passenger vehicle production estimates for February and March. In addition, manufacturers are literally overwhelmed by an excessive amount of new European legislation, whether in the form of the unacceptable proposal for new Euro 7/VII emission standards or increased pressure for the accelerated introduction of electromobility in heavy goods vehicles and buses. It is therefore critical that we work with the government to achieve changes that will ensure that mobility and the services associated with it remain affordable for Czech citizens,” says Zdeněk Petzl, Executive Director of the Automotive Industry Association.

ŠKODA AUTO, the largest domestic carmaker, produced 70,599 passenger cars (+13.2%) at its domestic plants in the first month. In absolute terms, 9,291 more passenger cars were produced in Cologne in the period. Hybrid vehicles (HEVs) accounted for over 54% of production.
