The Czech automotive industry is reaching another major milestone. Toyota Motor Europe (TME) has announced that it will start production of its new battery electric vehicle at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Czech Republic (TMMCZ) plant in Kolín and will also build capacity for the assembly of battery systems there. The total investment will reach almost CZK 17 billion, with the Czech government supporting it with an incentive of CZK 1.6 billion.

The expansion of the plant by more than 20,000 m² includes the construction of a new paint shop and welding shop, the installation of a production line for battery electric vehicles, and the expansion of production to include the assembly of battery systems. Toyota currently employs approximately 3,200 people in Kolín, and the new investment will create an additional 245 skilled jobs.

“Toyota’s decision to invest nearly CZK 17 billion in expanding its Kolín plant and launching production of a new battery electric vehicle is great news for the whole of the Czech Republic. It confirms that we are an attractive destination for cutting-edge technologies – we have high-quality supply chains, skilled workers, and the necessary infrastructure to compete globally,” says Zdeněk Petzl, Executive Director of the Automotive Industry Association.

The significance of this project extends beyond the gates of the plant itself. Approximately 65% of the parts for the models manufactured at TMMCZ come from Czech suppliers, and the expansion will certainly bring new orders for dozens of domestic companies. “The production of electric cars and battery systems in Kolín is a significant boost for the Czech supply chain. New orders will help maintain high value-added production and well-paid jobs in the Czech Republic and support further investment in modern technologies,” adds Petzl.

The Automotive Industry Association has long been involved in preparing an environment that allows for flexible responses to current trends, such as the production and operation of electric vehicles in the Czech Republic. “I am proud that AutoSAP and its members are actively working with the government to implement similar strategic projects in the Czech Republic. The expansion of production in Kolín is proof that joint efforts are bearing fruit and that the Czech automotive industry is responding effectively to the transformation towards zero-emission mobility and production,” concludes Petzl.

The Automotive Industry Association would also like to thank Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala, Minister of Industry and Trade Lukáš Vlček and CzechInvest CEO Jan Michal for their support and cooperation, which contributed significantly to the realization of this strategic investment.
